Bastogne Historic Walk - The Battle of the Bulge 1944 -
65 years ago the greatest land battle of the American Army began, the Battle of the Bulge.
The walk this year will be in the area south-southwest of Bastogne.
The village of Sibret a major stronghold of the American defence could not be held. The Germans cut off the highway from Bastogne to the south completing the encirclement of the town.
On December 26, the spearhead of the 4th Armored Division of the 3rd Army on their way to Bastogne, decided to forget about strongly defended Sibret and to head for Assenois and Bastogne.
The situation in Bastogne was critical and it became imperative to break through the German lines and link up with the defenders of the town.
A few tanks and half-tracks attacked Assenois and at 16.50 hours succeeded in lifting the siege.
In the afternoon, there will be a parade downtown and wreath laying ceremonies honoring all the victims of the Battle of the Bulge.
